More Precise Lasik - Iris Registration Technology
Published February 1st, 2006 in News, TechnologyIn view of the somewhat negative reputation that Lasik has been garnering in recent years due to botch-ups, Lasik surgeons all over the world have been trying a number of different approaches to assure potential clients that their safety is a priority. One of the many ways is of course an improvement in the technology used during Lasik eye correction surgery.
According to a NBC2 news article, some doctors have already begun utilising iris registration technology to increase the precision of Lasik operations. Before the advent of iris registration technology, doctors had to manually mark out the eyes of patients when they were upright. This reduced the eye correction achieved through Lasik as the shape of the eye changes as one lies down.
With iris registration technology, computers can modify the markings to fit the changes in eye shape - increasing the correction achieved through Lasik operations. But the clearest and most tangible benefit of iris registration technology was expressed by Dr. Jonathan Frantz (in the news article linked to above):
"We’ve been in the 97 percent range. With this we’ll be in the 99-plus percent range. Now what’s the difference there? If you’re one of those plus patients I think it makes a big difference," said Frantz.
99-plus percent? Well, I’d prefer 100 percent, but clearly, 99-plus percent is much better than 97 percent.
